The Martian (2015)

Director Ridely Scott brings Andy Weirs’ book, The Martian, to the big screen. The story recounts how during a dust storm, Botanist /Astronaut, Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is hit by debris and is presumed dead only to be left behind by the crew of the Ares 3 on Mars. Watney must rely and his ingenuity in order to survive Mars’ harsh terrain until NASA can come with a rescue plan.

Ridley Scott has made his most accessible and entertaining movie in years. The Martian has all the elements needed to make for a great night at the movies. The film is an action packed nail biting rescue drama rolled into a gripping emotional character driven story. Ridley Scott seems to wisely balance the film with moments of humour in order to counter Watney’s horrific ordeal.

Matt Damon’s performance is fantastic as the likeable protagonist that the audience can root for.

I highly recommend The Martian. It’s truly an entertaining film where Ridely Scott and the entire cast create a brilliant, “man against nature” film… on Mars!
