Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (also referred simply as, Hobbs & Shaw). This 9th installment of The Fast and the Furious franchise is centered around the Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson ) and Deckard Shaw, (Jason Statham) who were introduced in the main series. It follows, frenemies, Hobbs & Shaw as they were recruited to apprehend Shaw's sister Hattie (Vanessa Kirby), an MI6 agent, who has allegedly stolen an extremely dangerous biological weapon.
The film was directed by David Leitch and written by Chris Morgan and Drew Pearce, from a story by Morgan.
In this latest installment, when the two men learn that Hattie is being hunted by a cyber-genetically enhanced terrorist, Brixton (Idris Elba) who works for a powerful criminal organization; the pair finally realize that, like it or not, they have to set aside their differences if they're going to save the world.
For whatever reason, I haven't been a huge fan of the Fast & Furious franchise and Hobbs & Shaw did very little to convince me otherwise.
Hobbs and Shaw's continues to use the formula of over the top action, some what comedic one-liners/catch phrases and themes on the importance of family just like th F&F movies but the film falls short on delivering a truly entertaining cinematic experience.
It's hard to be convinced of the film's underlying message that technology can never replace the human component or " heart" when this series has become become an increasingly CGI-fueled "superhero" franchise over the last decade.
Don't get me wrong, there are some decent action sequences and the chemistry between Johnson and Statham save this film from being a paint by numbers action flick.
Personally, I thought that both Vanessa King and Idris Elba were totally under-utilized in this film and they should lauded for his they bring out these paper-thin characters as much as they did.
Hobbs and Shaw is a decent summer action movie that serves as nothing more than Johnson's take as the lead in the franchise or as the best live-action G.I. Joe movie that The Rock never got to make.
There's a lot of potential in this spin off, but the powers that be need to take notes on how to make a kick action film by watching the Mission Impossible movies.
Recommended for Fast and Furious fans only.
