Under The Radar-Honeymoon Suite, The Big Prize (1985)

July 26, 2019

If there was ever a band that deserved success across the border, it was Canada's very own Honeymoon Suite(HMS).

The band generated a big buzz with their debut album, spawned 4 hit singles. (New Girl Now, Stay in the Light, Burning in love and Wave Babies.)

Now without a doubt, HMS's sophomore record, The Big Prize is their crowning achievement.

The Big Prize is not only one of the most consistent records of the band's career, it is one of the best melodic records ever to be released by any group...period!

All the songs are well played and produced. The album comes across like a greatest hits package with all the songs easily resonating with the listener. Even in 2019 the album does not sound dated.

The Big Prize was produced by Bruce Fairbairn (AC/DC, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi) with non-other than Bob Rob ( The Cult, Motley Crue, Metallica) as engineer.

The Big Prize sounded like a multi million dollar record and could have gone toe to toe; in terms of song quality and production value, against any of the big name band's out there at the time. The Big Prize is that damn good!

Like I said, the record comes off like a greatest hits package but, if I had to choose some of my favourite tracks, they'd be  the following: The hard hitting album opener -Bad Attitude, the hit single -Feel it Again, the rockers- Once the Feeling & All Along You Knew (featuring Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull) and the heartfelt ballade- What it Takes.

HMS seemed to have it all, the songs, the talent and impeccable production values. To this day I still scratch my head wondering how The Big Prize didn't make the band a global sensation.
