E3 2019: Nintendo Press Conference

Updated: Nov 20, 2022

Introduction

Either you are a fan of Nintendo or not. They very rarely miss the mark with their announcements. They have been in the business long enough that they know what works for their fans.

What I normally appreciate about their conferences is that it is pretty straight to the point. Have they had blunders? Yes they have. However, people give them the benefit of the doubt and they have proven time and time again that they know how to bounce back.

Now this is is 3rd year of the Switch E3 and the console is going very well. Let us see what Nintendo had in store for us this year. They did announce before E3 that there would no new hardware announcements and

Announcements

New DLC Characters for Super Smash Bros.

The conference started with some animated Smash Bros. content. They announced 2 new characters that would now be part of the universe. There are new Dragon Quest characters.

Later in the conference we saw a new character to be revealed and it was none other than Banjo Kazooie.

I actually liked how the latter was announced. When the sequence started, I thought it would be a Donkey Kong Country reveal. Then, it transitioned to the dog and ducks from Duck Hunt and I thought, may be that was the announcement? I was incorrect on both fronts, the reveal was for Banjo Kazooie.

Dragon Quest IX Definitive Collection

This is not my type of game but I must say that it looks good and it fits in well with the Switch. I think this will be a nice seller. Square Enix and Nintendo have officially confirmed that the release date will be for September 27th, 2019. That is approaching very fast.

Dragon Quest IX Definitive Collection

Luigi's Mansion 3

This is a franchise that has always been in the shadows of his brother Mario. However, these are really fun games and I am happy to see a trailer for this series.

From what we can gather from the trailer is that Mario and the crew have been captured by ghosts and it is up to Luigi to save them. Basically this is a light version of Ghostbusters.

Seiken Densetsu 3: Trials of Mana

This is a remastered / remake of the third installment in the series called Trials of Mana. From the trailer they say that it is remade from the bottom up. and I must say that it does look good.

The game is set to be released in the vague world of 2020.

Zelda: Link's Awakening Remake

So this one was pretty anticipated. Some wold argue that this is one of the best Zelda games of all time is getting the remake treatment and it looks spectacular. I cannot wait to play it.

You will be able to create your own dungeons with the Dungeon Creator. This could be so much fun. I think that with the success of Mario Maker, they realize that people like to create their own versions of the games they love. let us give them the power.

The other big news was the release date. The game will be available September 20th, 2019. This is fast approaching and it is one of the 2 games that I am really looking forward to.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

I love the animation for this trailer and it looks like it will be another great entry in the Nintendo catalog. Although this seems to be ways off as there was no gameplay and there was no tentative window when this would be released. So we may see this in a year or 2 minimum.

Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6

This was a surprise announcement for me. They are going to be releasing these 2 games on the Switch. This is awesome. Although, I was not a fan of RE 6, RE 5 is still pretty good. I am sure many fans will love this.

The best part about this, the release date is this fall. Now, I am surprised they do not have a hard date since it is so near. So, there is the possibility this gets pushed to the holiday season. However this is only speculation on my part.

No More Heros 3

The third entry on the Switch has been announced and will be available in 2020. That is a very big window. I would suspect later in 2020 but again that is only speculation. It really depends how far they are with the development.

I have to admit that this looks good and I am very tempted to play it. Although I have not played any of the previous games. Not sure if that will be an issue.

Daemon x Machina

I will admit that I know nothing about this game other than what is in the trailer. The good news is that there is a release date that is very near of September 13th, 2019.

Panzer Dragoon Remake

The last time that I heard about this game was for the Sega Saturn back in the late 90's. So this was a pleasant surprise that they are reviving this game for the Switch. As much as I played it only a few times, I am happy that Nintendo are reviving these old games. Unlike Ubisoft that announced Commander Keen and flubbing the excitement. This is refreshing to see from Nintendo. Good announcement.

Contra Rogue Corps

I was completely surprised that they announced a new Contra game. Some would say it is the best action shooter that existed on the original NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) and SNES (Super NIntendo Entertainment System).

This looks to be pretty cool. I am on board and it is releasing on September 24th, 2019. I am really looking forward to this.

Contra Anniversary Collection

I guess that this would be a great time to announce classic favourites from this franchise. Nintendo is releasing a compilation of all the previous games from the NES and SNES era. The games included on this collections are Contra for arcade and NES, Super Contra for arcade and NES, Contra 3: Alien Wars, Contra: Hard Corps, Operation C for Game Boy, and the Probotector versions of Contra 3 and Hard Corps. I am not sure how much this will cost but I am for sure getting the collection at some point.

Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order

This just looks like a typical Ultimate Alliance game. I would assume that they are going on the Avengers: Endgame bandwagon as the mail villain seems to be Thanos.

Looks good but it is a nice to have and not a must have game for me.

Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order

Mario and Sonic at the Olympics

I do not really have any thoughts about this game. It looks like fun but I am not sure that I would pay full price for it. I am sure that there will be some fans buying the title. It is just not my cup of tea. I may change my mind if ever I play it.

The release date is sometime in November.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy

This was previously release on the other consoles and it is now ready to be enjoyed on the go, on the Switch. The games included are Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. I only played the first game in the series and it was very fun.

Cadence of Hyrule

The game was released June 13th, 2019. This looks like a cute game that can be fun on the go.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

So everyone was looking for this to be announced and here it is. For me this is not exciting news as I am not a huge fan. I know what it is and people like it but I never really got into it.

Witcher III: Wild Hunt

This was rumoured for about a year and they finally announced it. One of the best action RPG's on this generation of consoles is being ported over to the Switch.

After the conference the specs were revealed. On the doc the game will display 720p, In handheld mode it will display at 540p. Not the best of specs but the game is so fun that it is more than worth it.

I have played it on my Twitch this year on the XBOX One and the game still holds up. The soundtrack to this game is off the charts. Great for the Switch and now you can play this great game on your bed.

It is a shame that they did not have a hard date other than later this year. That is disappointed.

Witcher III Trailer

Pokemon Sword and Shield

I am not a huge Pokemon fan as it was never my thing but many fans are looking forward to this title. No date was released.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2

This was a shocker to most people that were watching. They announced that they are working on the next Zelda game called Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2.

I must admit that I was surprised to hear this. Two years ago (E3 2017) they teased Metroid 4 and then we learned that they had to go back to the drawing board. I did not think that they scrapped it completely but it seems that they did.

Now this is just to show fans that they are working on one of their big franchises. I just do not expect it to be anytime soon. But this is one of those games where Nintendo fans see the title and they turn into putty. It is the same with the Metroid series.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 Trailer

Bottomline

I think that for me, Nintendo has won E3. As much as the XBOX Press Conference had the entertainment factor and a lot of games that looked awesome. Nintendo quietly does their own thing.

Who can argue with their strategy as they have been doing pretty well with this generation.

Although it was no secret, the fact that the Witcher III was announced for the console was awesome news.

Contra announcements were exciting for me. I have been a fan of the franchise since the arcade and this woke up the 10 year old me. I will buy the collection and the new game. Who does not want to play Contra on the go.

The Resident Evil 5 and 6 reveal was pretty exciting news. Even though 6 was not a great game in my opinion, replaying RE 5 will be fun.

I am actually looking forward to Luigi's Mansion 3. There is just something about those games that I love and this will be awesome.

Zelda: Link's Awakening looks so fun. The new dungeon creator will pump extra life to this game and it will be very fun.

In the end, there is something for everyone here. There are returning of some classics, new games and some 3rd party support. I think it was one of the most well balanced E3 Press Conference and it was done over a video. They took the fluff away from the event and just focused on the games.

This is what E3 should be. This was a good one in my eyes.

What do you guys think? Let us know.
