This is a game which I got free on XBOX Live with Gold. I would have probably never played this if I would have to pay for it. I had started to play it about a year ago but I had stopped for some reason. So I decided to play this game on stream and finally get it completed.
That is one of the reason why I play on stream. It forces me to actually complete the game and not quit halfway through.
Let us see if this game is good or bad.
You play the character of Ronan O'Connor who has been killed by the Bell Killer. After an altercation with the killer, Ronan is pushed out of a window and is shot for good measure.
After Ronan realizes that he is dead, he speaks to his deceased wife. She advises that he cannot cross over until he resolves something that was not resolved in his living life. If you read between the lines, it means that he needs to find who killed him so that his soul could be at peace.
The rest of the game is a detective game. It is very similar to the TellTale Games with less fighting. It also plays out like an episode of The Ghost Whisper.
For the most part I loved the gameplay. Since the story was interesting git kept me going in the game. However there were a few things that I was not a big fan of.
The camera angles can be weird. So finding the hidden items is not too difficult. However, sometimes you need to find clues for the case and you pass by something 10 times and the X (for the XBOX), does not appear. The out of the blue it does. You have to be perfectly positioned in order for items to be interactive. This is a bit of a bummer as other games have done a much better job of this.
The second issue that I have with the game are the demons. They add an extra layer of difficulty with no benefits. They just hinder the game in my eyes. Also sometimes when fighting these demons, the buttons do not react the way that you would expect to.
Other than those 2 things, I think the gameplay is fun. I like detective kind of games and this one is exactly what the doctor ordered.
Sample Gameplay - Murdered: Soul Suspect
I think this game is worth the pick up. It will take the average player between 8 to 12 hours depending on how you play. so it is short but satisfying.
Although I was not a big fan of the demons, I liked the story and the side quests. Some of the side quests can be confusing and there are times where you are not too sure what the next step is. It is a lot of trial an error.
This is not the case with the main story. It is pretty linear and you always seem to know what the next step is.
Some complained that the game is a faux open world. This is true if you compare the game to the Fallout Series and other games of the same type. However, there were times where I just wanted to take a break from the game and I explored the world. Yes it is not huge but it does the job. Too big of a world is not always better in my honest opinion.
Some also hvae said that Ronan is emotionless. Which yes there are times where you would ahve expected something more from the main character. However, the character himself is someone that has had a rough life and not much would affect him. So for me it did not bother me too much and I did like the voice acting.
Overall I think this game is worth the price of admission. I am not aware how much this game was on launch but I am sure it is pretty affordable now. The fact that I got it for free is well worth it. I love single player stories and i am not getting tired of them.
