Game Name: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, DLC A System Rift
Release Date: September 23rd, 2016
Systems: XBOX One, Playstation 4, Windows and Mac OS
So after almost 2 years I finally decided to play this DLC from Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. I had started it when it launched and I never finished it. I also needed something to stream on my Twitch channel and this was a great fit. Let us see how it is.
This DLC was the first to be released for Mankind Divided. It reunites hacker and IT extraordinaire, Francis Pritchard. He does not work with Sarif Industries as it has gone under. So now it would seem that he works for private clients now.
The opening sequence has Pritchard asking Jenson for help. Basically the premise is that Jenson, Pritchard and this other hacker Shadowchild, will help each other in order to break into one of the Palisade Bank branches called The Blades. They have to get some evidence fabout the Santeau Group. In addition you also discover a murder plot of one of the Palisade employees, Simona Saridakis.
The story takes place in the middle of the Mankind Divided main game. I believe it takes place around the time when you go into Miller's NSN in the main game.
The first thing that you will need to get used to is that you were stripped pretty much of most of your augmentations. So this means that even if you ended the game with all of your augmentations, you will have to start with some augs dorment. That can be frustrating especially if you were used to play a certain style.
I understand why they did this. It was done to make the game more challenging and make the player play around more with inventory management. If this was in the main game, I would have had most of my
I also thought that because you have to use your augs carefully because you do not have a lot of Praxis Kits, I feel as if you are penalized if you do not choose the right augs. I chose a few thinking that they would be useful and they ended up not being useful and I should have chosen others. So this is disappointing.
The DLC itself is quite short. If you just want to get through the main story, you can get through it in about 4 to 5 hours. I took longer as I like to explore.
Even 2 years after this DLC was released and having a clear mind when playing it, it just felt like they took a mission from the main game that was weaker and put it as a DLC.
This could have easily been part of the game. This kind of DLC is what I do not like about most DLC's in general. It feels like the main game was complete and then they decided to release an incomplete game just so that they could make money on charging for the DLC. Now you can download the main game and all the DLC for 30$ on most platforms. However, when this was released, this DLC was 4.99$ I believe. If you bought the season pass you got the 2 DLC and the main game. The second DLC was even worse at 11.99$.
I did enjoy the story a little but something about this DLC seemed off. It just did not feel like the main game. Now there is no point in recommending it or not as most of the time if you download the main game, you get this DLC as well.
I must admit, I always had a sweet spot for Pritchard. I always liked the banter between Jenson and him. Although they make it seem on the surface they hate each other, deep down they do care for each other. Proof of that is at the end of the story, they have a conversation and Pritchard advises that this may be the last time that they ever work together. Jenson turns off the TV after he finds Pritchard annoying. He sits on his couch and whispers, take care of yourself. I found that it showed the caring nature of Jenson, even if it is for a split second. Here is the clip below (at 34 minutes).
Unfortunately, I will have to grade this poorly. Yes we meet our friend Pritchard but it is not enough for me to like this DLC. In fact, it did not feel like a DLC but more a side quest from the main storyline.
Also, is it just mean or Pritchard is the only character they did not revamp for Mankind Divided. It looks like they took the same animations and look from Human Revolution when the graphics were not as good. Anyways, just my thought anyways.
