Streets of Rage 2 Review (XBOX 360)

Game Name: Streets of Rage 2

Developer: Sega and Ancient

Publisher: Sega

Platform: Arcade, XBOX 360, Sega Genesis and many more

Release Date: December 1992

Introduction

I decided to review this version of Streets of Rage because it is the one that I am the most familiar with. I played it in the arcade, back when the games would cost a quarter. I know, it is insane. Then I saw it for 3.99$ on XBOX live and I couldn't pass the opportunity to play such a great game.

History

This game is obviously the sequel to the original game Streets of Rage. In Japan it was released under the name Bare Knuckle II: The Requiem of the Deadly BattleBare.

With time this game has been regarded as one of the best games of all time. Due to the success of the second instalment, a third game called Streets of Rage 3 was released in 1994.

Plot

The plot is very simple. You are one of four players (Max, Axel, Blaze or Skate). My personal favourite was always Max. He is a little slow but he packs quite a punch.

Basically the syndicate is back with Mr. X at the helm and you try to stop him by going through various levels with the help of your friends. (I guess when they do not know how to name the villain it is Mr, X - See Kung Fu or Spartan X on NES).

Gameplay

You get to choose one of the four characters mentioned above and you then start your quest to beat Mr. X. I played this on the XBOX 360 so the controls are very similar to other fighting, beat 'em up games.

The Left stick is used to move around (you can also use the D-Pad). There is one button to kick, one to jump and one is a special move. Very easy to control and the controls are very responsive.

To see a run through the game please see the video below.  I used Max as my character as it was the best character for me.

Gameplay Video

 Soundtrack

One of the reasons for the game's popularity was due to the amazing soundtrack. I think that it is up there with Ninja Gaiden and Contra as the most recognizable soundtracks for a video game. Many fans have made guitar metal covers and others just play the soundtrack for hours on end. See an example below.

 Bottomline

This is one of the best games that I have ever played. I have been playing it for years and it is always as satisfying beating the final boss. If you like Final Fight tyoe game then this is your game. It also recently was released for iOS and various emulators. Should pick it up as it is a good game.
