Game System: Nintendo Switch
Release Date: March 3rd, 2017
If you follow my Facebook or Twitter feed, you may have seen that I recently purchased a Nintendo Switch. Someone at work had bought the switch and determined that he was not playing with the system as much as he thought he would. So I said what the hell. of course I needed the permission from my wife to purchase it. :)
From all the systems out there, it is probably the lightest and smallest. Unlike the big PC engines of the XBOX One and the Playstation 4, this system just has a simple doc, 2 joy-con controllers and a small handheld screen.
As you can see, it is pretty tiny. The idea is that you can take the joy-cons off the joystick dongle and you can add them to the small screen and then this console is portable. I find that the left and right thumb sticks feel a little cheaper than with the XBOX One controller. However so far I have had no issues with them.
Unlike other systems, the Nintendo Switch will not have a ton of apps so the interface does not need to be as polished as other systems. Although, it does seem bland. It does what it is supposed to do but the layout could have been a little better. I guess I will see how it will handle once the Online services are available. This was recently announced for a September tentative timeframe.
The system that I got, came with 2 big games. It came with Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. So far I have only really played with Super Mario as this is the game I was really anticipating to play. I was excited for this game since they announced it early last year.
I have to admit that I am impressed with the 3rd party support so far. With Doom and the soon to be released Wolfenstein II, the console is getting some 3rd party games. They are a little late but that does not matter. Being able to play these games on a portable system is cool. Yes, the graphics are scaled down but on the portable version this is less noticeable. You see more of a difference when you play on the big screen.
There are also a bunch of games that I would like to try out as well. Bayonetta II is coming on the system soon and I absolutely cannot wait for Metroid Prime 4. Although I doubt that it will be released this year, I cannot wait to play it.
I must admit that I have been having a lot of fun with the system. I did not think that I would like the portability as much as I have. I play Mario in my bed and I am playing the real game and not a dumb down version.
There are still some massive flaws with the system. The storage is still a big question mark. You need to buy a SD card in order to have more storage, which is an additional cost.
The online offerings right now are slim. They are releasing it later this year and at a much cheaper price than the PSN and XBOX Live Gold. But I hope that it is enough to keep people interested.
I rarely play multiplayer games or party games, so the chat thing does not bother me as much. However, I really hope that they get this sorted. using an app to chat is just wrong. It should be integrated with the system.
I cannot give a full review until I play with the system more but so far I must admit that I am enjoying it. Hopefully this lasts.
