2017 Retrospect - Video Games

Updated: Nov 20, 2022

Introduction

After taking a few weeks off I am back and ready to attack 2018. Hope that everyone had a great holiday season. Now it is a time to reflect on the year that was, 2017. There have been some truly outstanding games in 2017. No matter what system that you were on, there was something for everyone.

Cuphead (XBOX One)

I do not have any other console except the XBOX One. Yes this year was not a great year in terms of exclusives for the system, but this one sure made up for it. I am a huge fan of platformers and games that challenge me. This one had it all.

Some people did say that it was too difficult. I personally think that it was challenging but not impossible. In a day and age where with little effort you can move within a game. This one forced the player to learn the pattern of the game. You had to redo many levels over and over again. To me that is what these games are about. Instant gratification is not always the key to a great game. Also, the visuals are really breath taking. Especially for me who loves old vintage cartoons from the 1920's and 1930's.

if you have an XBOX One, you owe it to yourself to play this game.

Wolfenstein II (Playstation, XBOX One, and Switch (Soon))

This one was a little bit of a surprise. I was really anticipating the second instalment of this game, however, I did not expect it to be this good. Yes the subject matter can be difficult to watch at times. The characters are very well written and you feel for everyone. It was like playing through a movie. LIke I said this game is not for everyone, but it is one hell of a game.

In 2018, this is supposed to be released on the Switch. I can see players playing this on their commute. I hope that they do the same job as with Doom (2016) for the switch.

Batman: The Enemy Within (iOS, Android, MacOS, XBOX One, Playstation and Microsoft Windows)

This one flew under the radar. No one really paid attention to this game but I liked it. This is the second season to the Batman TellTale Series. This season deals new characters such as Bane, Amanda Waller, Mr. Freeze, and Harley Quinn.

I just always enjoyed playing theseTellTale Games and I like this series in particular. If you wait long enough, usually these games are free on PSN and XBOX Live Gold.

Honorable Mentions

This year has been very good to Nintendo. The Switch is selling better than I ever thought it would and to my amazement, there have been some quality games that came out for the system. I played briefly these 2 but I do not own a Switch. However from what I hear from people, these are 2 great games.

Playstation had a great year as well. There were a few games that really stood out in 2017. These are a few of them.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

Another one that really caught my eye and that many players have played is Horizon Zero Dawn. From what I have seen, for those who do not have Zelda, this is your best alternative.

Most PC gamers this year went wild with the release of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. Many people loved the multiplayer gameplay. However it has been a rough start on the XBOX One, there is a lot o potential there.
