So here I am in June 2016 with Geoff John’s 80-page double issue DC Universe: Rebirth in my hand. Was all this hype true? All I can say, if this is the foundation of the Rebirth launch, then it’s a very strong and emotional start. John’s rebirth is a heartfelt observation of the current state of the DC Universe. I might even consider it a love letter.
Geoff John’s Rebirth is an imaginative story where, we see what went missing in DC comics through the eyes of one of their most beloved characters: Wally West (aka Kid Flash). Wally West has been trapped in a time stream desperately trying to connect to friends and family since in his own words, “… right now I’m worse than dead, I’m forgotten”. Those words might not mean much at first but as you keep reading, you clearly see John’s heartfelt observation of the DC Universe. As exciting as The New 52 was, over the course of five years, our heroes’ lost something. More importantly though, the fans lost out on some of the most important aspects of the DC Universe: Hope, optimism, history and the relationships between these iconic characters.
There are many more poignant quotes throughout Rebirth that really showcase Geoff John’s love for these characters, but I won’t even try to do them justice.
What I will say however, is that Rebirth doesn’t erase the events of the New 52, it honestly and wisely just points out their shortcomings.
Rebirth is one of the most touching, call to arms, that I’ve read in a long time. Offering me everything I could want in a relaunch: a sense of wonder, hope and a huge smile on my face for the future.
