In 2014, directors Anthony and Joe Russo; along with screenwriters, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFelly, took the Marvel movies to a whole new level with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The Winter Soldier was an amazing film with a great mix of action and espionage that successfully managed to update Captain America’s mythos for a modern audience.
Now, the same team reunites for Captain America: Civil War. This film takes place about a year after the events of Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015). The film deals with the public’s growing concern over the collateral damage caused by The Avengers while saving the world.
Our heroes are approached by former general, turned Secretary of state, Thaddeus Thunderbolt Ross (William Hurt), who with the United Nations have come up with a solution to this problem - the Sokovia Accords. This accord is an agreement that requires the Avengers (and other super-powered individuals) to report to and be monitored by an international governing body. While some super-powered individuals agree to this compromise, Captain America has concerns over each country’s different governmental agendas.
I feel CA: Civil War is a great addition to the Marvel franchise because it showcases some of the most mature and ambitious storytelling to date that intertwines issues of personal and political accountability into an action packed popcorn movie.
If there is one movie that has it all right now, it’s Captain America: Civil War.
