Unsung Heroes Part 2: Blade (1998)

Over the last few years, movies based on comic books have become a huge box office draw and this trend shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. But that wasn’t always the case. There was a time when movies based on comic books were actually a “gamble” for movie studios. So, I would like to dedicate the next couple of reviews to some of those “gambles and or forgotten movies that turned the public’s view around on the comic book phenomena. Here are some of the unsung heroes that started the global success of comic based movies.

Wesley Snipes plays Blade; a half-human-half vampire who protects the human race against the evil vampires who walk the earth. Blade was the anti-twilight even before twilight existed. What makes this film so important? Blade was not one of Marvel’s most popular characters and even with an R rating, it still managed to gross an impressive 130 million worldwide. Proving that if the film is done well and stays true to the origins of the character, the fan base will go see it.
