Guardians of the Galaxy

August 7, 2014

Marvel expands into outer space with their newest blockbuster, Guardians of the Galaxy.

The story of Peter Quill / Starlord (Chris Pratt) who gets himself in a whole galaxy of trouble once he double crosses his partner/mentor Yondu (Michael Rooker) and steals a powerful orb and getting the unwanted attention of a fanatic called Ronan the Accuser(Lee Pace).

Quill has to form an uneasy alliance with a motley crew of characters comprised of Gomorra (Zoe Saldana), Groot (Vin Diesel), Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), who must manage to somehow work together and retrieve the orb from Ronan and restore peace in the galaxy.

What made Guardians so much more enjoyable for me was the fact that I was unfamiliar with these characters so all I had to do was watch the movie instead of comparing it to the comic book.

Director James Gunn makes all the Guardians likeable in this film but Chris Pratt steals the show as Quill/ Starlord. He’s a John McClane (Die Hard) meets Han Solo all in one kind of guy.

My only minor disappoint with Guardians really, the Villains. First, Lee Pace brings a lot of intensity to his character, Ronan the Accuser, but with the lack of a back story the movie goers can’t really get behind him. Second, Nebula played by Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) one of Ronan’s assassins, should have been given more screen time, she is definitely a scene stealer.  Hopefully more of her character will materialize in the sequel.

Director James Gunn does a wonderful job bringing the viewers into the world of Guardians of the galaxy delivering a rip roaring fun filled summer Sci-fi blockbuster for the whole family.
