The Hunt for Red October (1990)

The Hunt for Red October is the third film from director John McTiernan, and was released in 1990 starring Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin. Sam Neill and Scot Glenn.

The story is set in 1984 where Captain First Rank Marko Ramius (Connery) commands the Soviets new submarine Red October, equipped with a caterpillar drive making it undetectable to sonar. Ramius who is believed to be conducting tests with Red October, changes course to the American east coast.

The soviets believe Ramius has gone rogue and the U.S. believe that the commander of the Red October is planning a nuclear strike but CIA analyst Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) believes that Ramius is planning to defect.

On a race against time Jack Ryan must prove his theory before the Red October is sunk by the U.S. or the Soviets.

The Hunt for Red October is not the greatest thriller ever made, but a damn good try at one. The performances are great all around but in all honesty Sean Connery owned this movie. Even without the Russian accent he had a presence that took away any flaws in the film.

If you are looking for something a little different than your typical action movie, give Hunt for Red October a try.
