Here we are with the second instalment in the Captain America movies entitled The Winter Soldier, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. Captain America 2 takes place after the events of the Avengers (keeping with the continuity of the Marvel films).
The Russo brothers have done something truly remarkable with this sequel to Captain America. They have built upon the origins story of the first in a unique and refreshing way. Steve Rogers is still trying to adjust and fit into the modern world (while protecting it). And instead of the "fish out of water/ man out of time" gags, the brothers Russo use a hero's journey on how to merge his beliefs into this new world.
Without giving anything away, Captain America the Winter Soldier may be one of the best Marvel movies to date. A solid story line with some of the best action sequences in the Marvel series.The Russo brothers have taken what could be seen as a goody two shoes hero and made him cool for the modern movie goer (without sacrificing the core values of our hero).
As for the cast , Chris Evans in his third outing as Captain America/ Steve Rogers, really hits the mark. Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff) is quite the scene stealer. Robert Redford is great as Alexander Pierce. Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan are great as Falcon and Winter Soldier respectively. And of course Samuel L. Jackson, is always spot on in his portrayal of Nick Fury.
The Winter Soldier made me a Captain America fan again. All I can say is, step aside Iron Man, the true leader of the Avengers is here.
