The Adam Project (2022)

The Adam Project is science fiction adventure film directed by Shawn Levy and stars Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, Zoe Saldana and Walker Scobell, who plays a young 12 year old version of Ryan Reynolds character. The film was released in March 2022 on Netflix and quickly became one of the biggest debuts of 2022 for Netflix. The movie was positively received by the audience, however the critics had luke warm reviews. The movie originally had Tom Cruise as a star back in 2012, but the film had major production issues and stayed dormant until Netlix picked up the distribution rights. In addition, The Adams Project made Ryan Reynolds the only actor to have 3 movies on Netflix's all time top 10 list (The Adams Project, Red Notice and 6 Underground).

Without going into too much about the plot, Ryan Reynolds stars as a pilot who crash lands in 2022 and meets his 12 year old self. In the process, he ends up facing his fears about grieving and coming to terms about his past, which includes going back in time to meet his dad who is played by Mark Ruffalo.

If you are looking for an Oscar type of movie, this is not the one for you. However, this is a fun loving, easy going, action packed movie that will entertain you for about an hour an a half. If you like the Ryan Reynolds humor, you are in for a treat. The chemistry between Reynolds and his 12 year old self, Walker Scobell, is amazing. The casting was right on target with Walker. You can see Walker as a 12 year old Reynolds. Jennifer Garner, who plays Reynold's mom, was also a plesant surprise. Especially whien the Reynold's older self meets his mom as a grown man is a great scene. Another pleasant surprise is Mark Ruffalo. He brings this fatherly insight to Reynolds and also steals a scene when he punches Reynolds. It is the most hilarious punch you would ever see. Check the scene below:

The Bottom-Line

The movie's special effects and fighting scenes are at par with any Hollywood Studio. What I really liked about this movie was beyond all of that. It deals with greiving a parent and a loved one. It also deals with parenthood and how it affects your children. These are themes that you do not expect to find in this type of movie. Maybe that is why many movie critics did not see this movie in a favorable light. The only week spot is perhaps the plot, but even then, most Hollywood movies have plots that do not always makes sense. If you want to escape for an hour and a half, and experience different emotions, you will definitely enjoy this movie.

I give this movie a 9/10. A great Friday movie night at home.
