My Favorite Record Producers - Robert John "Mutt" Lange

Updated: Nov 21, 2022

Mutt Lange is known for his massively over-produced arrangements and vocal harmonies. However, that meticulousness to achieve the hard-hitting sonic perfection has made him one the most successful and in demand in the music producers in the business. His track record speaks for itself-to date 111 million albums have been sold sporting Lange’s production credit.

Love him or hate him ,there is no doubt that Lange has created some of the most successful and endearing records in arena rock.

Essential Listening

1. AC/DC-Back in Black (1980)- At 25 million units and counting Back In Black is the measuring stick for which all hard rock albums are measured against.

2. Def Leppard- Hysteria (1987)- At the time Hysteria was the perfect blending of flawless songcraft and cutting-edge technology, selling more than 15 million copies worldwide.

3. Foreigner- 4 (1981)- If you were to look up the word arena rock in the dictionary, there would be a picture of Foreigner 4 album right beside. The album had it all: heavy rockers (Nightlife), anthems (Juke Box Hero) , raunchy R&B vibes (Urgent) and one of the greatest ballads ever (Waiting For A Girl Like You). The record sold six million units and made Foreigner a staple on rock radio.
