Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017) - Review

Updated: Nov 21, 2022

Writer, director Matthew Vaughn returns to the world of spies with the Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The eagerly awaited sequel to 2014’s surprise hit, Kingsman: The Secret Service . The movie stars Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Julianne Moore, Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges & Sir Elton John, yup, you read that right … The Rocket Man is in the film.

Eggsy Unwin (Taron Egerton) has settled into life as a full-blown Kingsman agent, taking up the title of Agent Galahad from his fallen mentor. But Eggsy’s old nemesis Charlie Hesketh (Edward Holcroft) who is working with the drug cartel known as the Golden Circle arrives to deliver a devastating blow by eliminating all Kingsman except for Eggsy and Merlin (Mark Strong). Eggsy and Merlin are forced to track down their American counterparts, the Statesman. In Kentucky, they meet the Statesman’s leader, Champ (Jeff Bridges), as well as agents Tequila (Channing Tatum), Whiskey (Pedro Pascal), and their tech support, Ginger Ale (Halle Berry).

Together the Kingsman and Statesman discover that The Golden Circle is a drug cartel run by Poppy (Julianne Moore) who is planning to poison her own drug supply in an attempt to blackmail the government into legalizing all drugs.

Mathew Vaughn has delivered an entertaining follow up to the Secret Service. The film carries on Vaughn’s vision of the spy genre, providing excellent action sequences that are driven by compelling characters. Fans of the first will surely enjoy the second trip into the universe of the Kingsman. Highly recommended.

P.S.- Elton John is totally amazing in this film and is a hoot to watch.
