Price: 79.99$

I know that I am very late with this review. I hesitated to buy it for a while. I thought that the initial price of 80$ was a little high. However there was a sale one weekend and it was 59.99$. So I took the plunge. I had heard only good things about it but I did not believe the hype.

I had played the Beta when it came out and I was not impressed. I found the multiplayer a little bland to be honest. So, I was not sure how the single player would be.

If you had played the original Doom then you know what to expect. It is a fast paced shooting game. The first thing that caught my eye is of course the visuals. The game is looks beautiful. It looks great on my XBOX One, so I can just imagine on a PC. So for this aspect they have nailed it.

The game is what I believe fans have been looking for the last 20 years. It is the original Doom with upgraded graphics. The same basic mechanics of the original game are here. You have various aliens that you enjoy shooting to bits. Next, the game is fast. Most players that have played the original, will feel right at home here. Lastly, the weapons are there and are fantastic. You have the regular array of guns that are slightly different than the original. The BFG is still there though so do not worry. :)

One of the big changes is that they added Mercy Kills. This is when you are in close proximity of the enemy and instead of shooting them, you rip off their head with your hands. Doing so, will reward you with health and ammo bonuses. This is a pretty sweet addition and is very affective. In certain circumstances, you would normally shoot them but if you are low on health, you may go for this option. It adds an element of strategy to levels.

The one thing that I realized compared to Doom 3, is that the levels are very open. My strategy to attack the level was very similar than I used on the original Doom. You kill everyone and then you search the areas for secrets and collectibles. The game took me probably longer than most because I was looking for the secrets. I got lost in that world.

I will admit that I did not care for the storyline. There is one but for me it was killing and clearing the level that was the most important. The basic premise is that you are stopping a station from blowing up as some entity wanted to purge the station. At least this is what I think it is. I could look it up but it defies the point that I am trying to make. The storyline does not really come in consideration when enjoying this game.

Sample Gameplay

For the old school players out there, I think this is worth a pick up. It is a fun game to be had. I personally like these games more than Battlefield because you do not need a strategy if you do not want to. You can just go in and shoot everything to the high heavens.

This is the Doom that fans wanted. Pure and simple. Although Doom 3 was enjoyable, it lost the fast paced gameplay that we were used to with the first 2 Doom games. This game will not win any awards because it is just in your face violence with not much of a storyline. In my books, it was one of the better games released last year. I hope that Quake will be just as good as this.

Rating: 8.5 dead aliens out of 10
