Underworld: Blood Wars (2016)- In Need of New Blood

Updated: Nov 21, 2022

In the fifth installment in the Underworld Franchise, Kate Beckinsale returns once again as Vampire death dealer, Selene except this time, Selene is on the run from both the Lycan and the Vampire factions that betrayed her. Joined by her only allies, David (Theo James) and his farther Thomas (Charles Dance), Selene must end this eternal war once and for all.

For most of us, the Underworld films have been a guilty pleasure for years, offering some good old fashion, harmless entertainment. However, as much as I enjoy that type of movie, like any other franchise that has lasted this long, that dreaded “been there, done that” scenario begins to creep in. Well, Blood Wars didn’t escape that fate. Without taking anything away from the Underworld series, there are a few surprises in Blood War that I really enjoyed except I knew that in the end there was going to be a Lycan/Vampire show down.

If they’re going to keep making the Underworld films, I think they need to shake things up a bit. First, they need to stop using CGI effects on the Lycans; practical effects would make them look much scarier. Second, since Selene is one of the most revered death dealers in Vampire history, why not focus on her story and give us a film (or two) about this legendary death dealer. Last, but not least, if Selene’s daughter is so darn important, why not bring her into the films?

Underworld Blood War isn’t going to change your opinion on the franchise; you’re either in for the ride or you’re not. This latest entry is entertaining but it doesn’t do much at all for the franchise.

A soft reboot is in order to give the franchise some ehm, new blood.
