The Accountant (2016)

Updated: Nov 21, 2022

Ben Affleck plays Christian Wolff, a seemingly ordinary small town accountant, diagnosed as a high functioning autistic. During the film, however, we find out that Wolff is no ordinary accountant. He’s a math savant that uses his abilities to help balance the books for some of the deadliest criminal organizations in the world.

His activities attract the attention of Treasury Department agent Ray King, played by J.K. Simmons, who assigns his associate Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) to track down Wolf and discover his secrets.

The Accountant is truly an original action film where all the actors involved are great in their respective roles. There isn’t a weak link in the bunch.

The only issue with this film is that it tries too hard to be original. It tries to balance too many genres at once. There’s the story of a person with learning difficulties trying to find his place in this world, then the story of Wolff’s fractured family along with crime, action and romantic elements all trying to piece themselves together into one film.

Affleck’s character that got me interested in this film in the first place. Perhaps, if the writer and director would have focused on his motivation more intently it would have been a more rewarding film.

All in all, the Accountant is still a very good film and deserves to be seen.

Recommended.
