E3 Roundup 2016 (Playstation Impressions) - Part 1

Updated: Nov 20, 2022

Introduction

Another year and another E3 is already in the books. I will be honest, I did not expect much out of this E3 as many of the big players were not part of this conference this year. Much of the rumors and trailers were leaked before the conference even started. In my opinion, these rumors takes the excitement away from discovering new things.

I also waited a week before giving my thoughts as many reviewers go gaga over certain pieces of information and that wears off fast in some cases. I wanted to have a clear head when I provide my views on the news that was released.

Console Wars

This year there was no contest as to who the winner was in the console wars. Playstation came to the conference prepared. XBOX was just average. In my eyes, they did not do anything that could cause them to lose players, but they did not impress either. Nintendo, well they were almost not existent. There was a little bit of news, but they were really not part of the discussion.

Playstation

People buy consoles for one thing and one thing only, high quality games. Playstation did not disappoint this year. There was an impressive list of games that looked awesome on demos.

Spiderman

The game footage was very impressive. The visuals look crisp and responsive. Insomiac will be the makers of the game, and I think they did a spectacular job with the visuals. I hope that this game is an open world where Spidey can explore the world on his own. I think that people have been waiting for a Spiderman game like that for a while and quite frankly it is quite over due. I think if the game is half as good as the graphics are, we should be in for a treat. Only time will tell on this one.

God of War 4

Again this is a beautiful looking game. The level of details is amazing. It was a little disappointing to learn that there will not be any multiplayer. But to be honest, most people, play the game for the story and not the multiplayer. They have had this feature in God of War Ascension, but I commend them for working on a campaign that people will enjoy. They focused on the sole mission, and that could be a good thing. The only confirmation that we know for sure is that according to the creators of the game, this is not the last Kratos game. I guess that could be considered a spoiler.

Resident Evil 7

As was already rumored the week before, Resident Evil 7 was announced as a new game in the coming year. People were apparently waiting for this new game. I was not one of those, but I can understand what the hype was all about. It has been a while since there has been a decent Resident Evil game, and from what people are saying initially, it may be coming back to its old glory.

Crash Bandicoot Remastered

Players have been waiting for this for quite a while. A collection of remastered versions of Crash Bandicoot. In the collection it will include Crash 1, Crash 2 and Warped. This has been long overdue. I think they got the older crowd interested on this platform. This will be cool to play and bring back old memories.

Honorable Mentions

The above I believe are the games that got most of the headlines when announced. There are a number of games that are flying under the radar. These are a few of the honorable mentions for the PS4.

Gran Turismo Sport

So this is the latest offering in the Gran Turismo family. I am mentioning it here as I have always a big fan of racing games from Rad Racer to Project Gotham. The last few games lacked luster. I think this new version has promise and will impress out of the gate. Hopefully it will not be a game solely based on the graphics with no meat.

The Last Guardian

This game has been in the making forever. May be not, but it feels that way, It has been in development since 2007, and it will finally see the light. The demo was quite impressive. My experience with games that take forever to get released is that they are usually disapointing or not as good as the hype. The premise for this game seems good and the graphics appear to be even better. Time will tell if the story keeps players engaged.

There were other PS games for VR (Virtual Reality), but nothing that grabbed my attention. For example Gran Turismo is available for VR as well. Call me old school, but I like my racing games with a controller in my hand and the visuals on a TV.

What games did you like for Playstation during E3. Let me know at my coordinates below.
