The world has been invaded by aliens called “Mimics” and during a D-Day like invasion, Tom Cruise (Major William Cage) is called in to join Earth’s final assault. But instead of a victory it becomes a massacre and Cage (Cruise) is killed within minutes of the invasion but forced to relive that day over and over again.

During Edge of Tomorrow we find out that these alien invaders have the ability to alter time and “reset” the day therefore allowing them learn from each invasion and ultimately win their war. When Cage (Cruise) kills one the Mimics in the invasion and soaks up its blood, he is given the ability to “reset” time as well.

As Cage relives the invasion he comes into contact with Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt) who has had a similar experience and understands what Cage is going through. They join forces and use Cage’s reset abilities to their advantage by trying to locate and destroy the head of the Mimics and win the war.

Edge of Tomorrow is an entertaining sci-fi, action film with everyone involved turning in fine performances. It was fun to watch Cruise loose his mind during the invasion sequences and not be the typical leading man that he always plays of late. Emily Blunt is equally fun to watch as the no nonsense super-warrior, Rita Vrataski. As for Bill Paxton as Master Sergeant Farell, he does another one of his top notch performances.

My minor dissatisfaction with Edge of Tomorrow; some of the back story regarding Emily Blunts character and her relationship with Cruise is not fully developed or brought out to its potential (perhaps a director’s cut on Blu-ray).

For those worried about watching the same scenes over and over again, don’t be. Director Doug Liman handles that aspect splendidly by enhancing the story without making it seem overused or cumbersome.
